Kendrick sounds relaxed, and in an album full of simple sexual metaphors, Lamar’s hook “Heart to my dying light, bullet to your rose / Then I watch your petal fold / Don’t you know your body been mine?” is refreshing and welcome. Not surprisingly, the Kendrick Lamar-filled closer ‘God is Fair, Sexy Nasty’ is the best on the album. Dan of ID Labs, one of the sonic highlights of the album. It’s evident in lyrics like “I opened your legs and go straight for your heart” on ‘Skin.’ Even a song called ‘Soulmate’ boils down to “When you take off all your clothes I’m under your control.” Thankfully it is delivered over the sexy-slick production of Dâm-Funk and E.

It’s fun and easy listening about the complications of relationships: “What a mess I made us, sense, I make none / It’s complicated, keeping me up late / Can’t concentrate, you’re always on my brain / If it’s love, then why the fuck it come with pain? / I just think that’s some bullshit.”īut Mac confuses sex for love. It leads wonderfully into the lead single, ‘Dang!’ and Anderson.Paak’s familiar soulful rasp pleading “I can’t keep on losing you over complications.” The soul beat behind the song compliments both the vocal styles of Anderson.Paak and Mac Miller. Opener ‘Congratulations’ features a simple piano underscoring Miller’s reminiscing about a particular lover until the outro featuring Bilal’s distinct croon. It’s clear that this album is designed as the background music for gettin’ freaky. There’s nothing mind-blowing about the style employed, but to its credit every sound on this album is easy to listen to. The album transitions like a mixtape, one song leading perfectly into the next. Mac’s easy-going vocal style blends nicely with the smooth jazz production throughout the album.

It seems that to Mac Miller, what is divinely feminine is merely some pussy that is “grammy nominated.” Most of the songs are sexually loaded, which isn’t bad, but don’t be fooled by the title into thinking this is an album which celebrates all of femininity. Will the music stand on its own or rely on special appearances? Throw in the fact that a hip-hop album by a white male artist is called The Divine Feminine, and it’s easy to wonder if you’re in for something laughable. It’s always easy to approach an album with caution when it has a roster of guest artists like Bilal, Anderson.Paak, Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, and Ceelo Green.
